Aranmula, a simple place near Kozhencherry in Pathanamthitta is known for its various kinds of specialties. ARANMULA word means six bamboos. The place got its name when Lord Krishna appeared on the shores on a raft made of six bamboos.
Being a global heritage, Aranmula is first known for VALLAMKALI(snakeboat regatta). Vallamkali has being the most ancient boat race in Kerala. The boats used at the race is known as Palliyodams. Vallamkali is incomplete until you eat the VALLASADHYA – a grand traditional feast. The feast is considered as an offering to Lord Parthasarathy, main deity of Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple, the feast is given to the team of oarsmen of each boat. The Palliyodams are decorated and row to the rhythm of songs sung by themselves, men wear white mund, a thorth on head.
Other major attraction in Aranmula is the ARANMULA KANNADI(metal mirror). It is one among 8 auspicious items included famous astamagalaya set ,which usually used for very auspicious function like marriage. The specialty is that it is made of metal and not glass. The making is still a secret to many people of our kind. Being one of the ancient thing it is considered to bring prosperity, luck and wealth to life. The British Museum in London has a 45 centimeter tall Aranmula metal mirror in its collection.
Third major attraction in Aranmula is the Parthasarathy Temple, where Lord Krishna is main deity. The temple is spread over large area on the banks of river Pamba.
